A coyote was euthanized after a toddler was injured in Atwater Village, wildlife officials said Saturday.

The incident involving a 16-month-old and a coyote was reported in the 3300 block of Glenhurt Avenue on Friday, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. More details about the encounter were not released.

Officials say the toddler was taken to the hospital and released.

Later that evening, the CDFW said a coyote in the area of the incident was euthanized. DNA samples from that coyote and the toddler were being analyzed to determine whether it was the animal involved, officials said.

The CDFW provided the following tips for coyote encounters:

  • Maintain a safe distance and back away slowly.
  • Keep small children and pets nearby.
  • Make loud noises and make yourself look bigger by waving your arms.
  • If a coyote makes contact, fight back and then call Animal Control or 911.
